Back surgery has put a line through the remainder of Richmond veteran Dylan Grimes' 2024 season.

Grimes last played for the Tigers in Round 8 in what was the defender's fifth game of the year, with injury concerns continuing to hamper the triple-premiership player.

The club stated in May that Grimes's battle with a back issue was ongoing, with an unclear timeframe set for his return.

"Dylan's coming in and out of training, he hasn't completed a session yet," Tigers performance boss Luke Meehan said in a club update prior to Round 11.

"His back's sort of on and off sore. We'll just assess him as he goes over the next week or so. But at the moment, he's unavailable until he can complete training."

Richmond confirmed on Wednesday that Grimes is set to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing back surgery.

The operation will see Grimes join Josh Gibcus, Sam Naismith, Tylar Young, Mykelti Lefau and Judson Clarke on the sidelines for the rest of the year, with all four teammates having suffered ACL injuries in 2024.

Currently unsigned beyond this season, Grimes may have played his last game in the yellow and black due to his most recent setback.

The unrestricted free agent has played 234 games for Richmond since debuting for the club in 2010 against Port Adelaide.

Grimes featured in all three of the Tigers' recent premierships and would be named co-captain alongside Toby Nankervis as the successors to Trent Cotchin ahead of the 2022 season.
