There is a total of 102 players who qualify as free agents, but Essendon's Sam Draper's classification in the unrestricted band has surprised the most.

Eligibility for restricted free agency means the players are in their eighth or ninth seasons at their respective clubs and are in the top 25 per cent of earners there, and Draper's status means rivals, in particular Adelaide, can come harder for his services.

It means that the Bombers wouldn't be able to match any bid for him, although the South Australian could still remain in Melbourne.

Tom De Koning and Oscar Allen's futures remain in the air, but given they fall under the bracket as a restricted free agent, both Carlton and West Coast have the capacity to match a bid from any rival.

Brandon Starcevich's time at Brisbane currently looks murky despite being one of the best defenders in the competition. The premiership Lion has suffered multiple concussions in the past 12 months and is currently sidelined, although is expected to stay in Queensland despite the lure of a return to his home state of Western Australia.

Western Bulldogs star Ed Richards is expected to remain at the Kennel while James Worpel poses as a potential target for rivals looking to bolster their midfield.

Players are eligible for free agency when their contracts with a club they've spent eight years with comes to an end.

Unrestricted free agents occur if a player has been at the club for 10 or more seasons, as well as being previously delisted or if they changed clubs via free agency.
