Former Lion Rhys Mathieson has found his new footballing home, joining QAFL outfit Wilston Grang Gorillas for the 2024 season.
Mathieson began life as a Lion after being selected with the 35th pick of the 2015 AFL Draft, with the Geelong Falcons product donning Brisbane's maroon, blue and gold on 72 occasions in eight seasons in the Sunshine State.
While the 26-year-old never lacked the confidence necessary to succeed at senior level, Mathieson fell out of favour at the Gabba, failing to feature for Chris Fagan's pride in 2023.
However, after departing the Lion's den, and reuniting with fellow ex-Lion Mitch Robinson during a brief stint for the Darwin Buffaloes, Mathieson put pen to paper with the Gorillas for 2024.
Taking to their own Instagram page, Wilston Grange's social media team announced that 'The Barometer' would call Hickey Park home next season.
"In arguably the biggest signing in our clubs rich history, all Gorillas supporters will be excited to see how Rhys rips the QAFL competition apart," they wrote."
"Matho's signature has been one of the most talked about this off-season, across the nation.
"Being settled north of Brisbane and having every intention to stay local, the QAFL competition started to become a suitable destination. After meeting with the Gorillas, Matho is impressed with the program provided, excited with the trajectory of the playing group and feels the Gorillas are the perfect fit."
Wilston Grange finished the 2023 QAFL season in fifth position with an 11-7 record and eventually saw its campaign come to a close by way of a 53-point preliminary final loss to Redland Victoria Point.
