Sydney has revealed that star ruckman Brodie Grundy has avoided any structural damage to his knee following a training incident on Wednesday.

Grundy left the track early after sustaining a knock to his knee and has subsequently been ruled out of Friday's pre-season clash with Gold Coast as a precaution.

A report from the Herald Sun indicated that Grundy was seen with physios who assessed the injury by "stretching his leg... some squats and practising some run-throughs. (Grundy) looked in slight discomfort but was still moving relatively freely".

Speaking on SEN Thursday morning, Swans CEO Harley allayed "any concerns" surrounding the severity of the former Pie's injury, but didn't provide his availability for Opening Round.

"The early indication is there's not serious structural damage," Harley said.

"He won't play the Gold Coast (pre-season clash) on Friday night and we'll see how he goes.

"But I'm reasonably confident I can allay any concerns around serious damage.

"So that's a positive for Brodie."

The Swans said Grundy is a "test" to face Hawthorn in just over a week.

The fear came as Grundy sat out the majority of the 2022 campaign - when he was still in the black and white - following a serious posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, which ultimately led to his trade to Melbourne.

The news comes as captain Callum Mills has been ruled out of the opening month of the 2025 season, as scans revealed a tear in his plantar fascia.

The Swans are also hopeful that key forward Logan McDonald will be right for Opening Round while veterans Harry Cunningham and Jake Lloyd have boxes to tick to be considered.

Sydney will host Hawthorn at the SCG on Friday, March 7 to kick off 2025.
