Sydney star midfielder Errol Gulden, who went down with an apparent serious injury on Friday night, has suffered a fractured ankle.
Gulden was caught in a tackle by Suns midfielder Will Graham, and when twisted in the tackle, Gulden's foot became trapped underneath.
Gulden struggled to rise from his feet immediately after earning the free kick, and once was up, failed to put weight on his left foot.
Scans revealed Gulden suffered a fractured ankle in the incident and will need surgery.
A timeline will be determined after surgery on Sunday.
The injury is a huge blow on the eve of the season for Sydney, with Gulden one of the Swans' star midfield trio alongside Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney. As a strong candidate for this year's Brownlow medal, a long-term injury would be devastating to a Swans side already aiming to defy history after their staggering blowout defeat to Brisbane in last year's grand final.
