Earning a 2024 Rising Star nomination earlier this season, Sydney Swans youngster Matthew Roberts is closing in on a new contract.

The South Australian-born talent has been a vital piece of the club's roster over the past few seasons and is finally set to be rewarded for his consistency and skill on the field.

Roberts, 20, has managed to appear in 12 of the club's 13 games this season with the highlight match being a 19 disposals and eight marks match against the Melbourne Demons in Round 1.

Already contracted at the Swans for 2025, Roberts is set to become the next player rewarded with a contract extension, following the likes of teammates Errol Gulden, Oliver Florent, Robbie Fox and Will Hayward.

According to AFL.com.au, the Sydney Swans are set to hand Roberts a two-year contract extension until the end of the 2027 season.

"That's something we're looking at with the club at the moment," Roberts' agent Tom Seccull told Gettable.

"We've been chatting for a bit of a month now. We're just putting some finishing touches on that, which is great for Matty."

Chosen by the Swans in the 2021 AFL Draft alongside Angus Sheldrick, Corey Warner and Lachlan Rankin, Roberts would make his AFL debut the following season in Round 11 after being a standout in the VFL.

Since then, the medium defender has managed 19 career appearances and was nominated for the 2024 Rising Star in the opening round of the season against the Melbourne Demons.

The Sydney Swans still have 15 players off-contract at the end of the season, headlined by Harry Cunningham, Jacob Konstanty, Sam Reid and Logan McDonald.
