Sydney key defender Lewis Melican was rewarded with a contract extension following a career-best season in 2024, penning a two-year top-up.

Melican was set to come out of contract at the end of 2025, but has been locked away by the Swans until at least the end of 2027.

The former Pick 52 was taken in the 2014 Rookie Draft, and has played 84 games including 24 last year, quickly becoming a significant pillar in defence.

"I've been at the club since I was 18, and had some ups and downs along the way, but the fact the club has backed me and wants to give me a few more years is exciting," Melican said.

"It's a great feeling to know that this is where I get to keep playing footy."

Emerging ruckman Will Green will also remain at the club until 2027, with the club excited by the prospects.

Green was drafted in 2023 with Pick 16 as a developing tall.

Standing at 204cm, the youngster has both coach Dean Cox and All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy to learn from, with the former singing high praises.

"The best part about Will is he is different to Brodie and Pete Ladhams," Cox said on AFL Media's Your Coach podcast.

"He's learning off both of those but athletically, his development has been really strong."

Sydney Swans EGM of Football Leon Cameron said he is thrilled for the pair.

"Lewis has shown over his career just how resilient he is, so this extension is a great reward for all of his hard work," Cameron said.

"He played his best and most consistent season for us last year and was a really important player in defence, so I look forward to seeing what the next couple of years will bring."

"We believe Will has the potential to be a really good AFL ruckman for us," Cameron added.

"He has had an outstanding pre-season, so extending until 2027 gives him every opportunity to develop his craft going forward."

The Swans still have a host of players out of contract, notably Chad Warner, who is fielding strong interest from West Australian clubs.

Aaron Francis, Angus Sheldrick, Dane Rampe, Jake Lloyd, Peter Ladhams and Robbie Fox will also need to work through their future plans.
