Sydney defender Harry Cunningham has re-signed for a further two seasons, set to remain a Swan until at least the end of 2026.
Cunningham looks to continue his consistent form in the backline across the past two years, having played 45 of a possible 47 games. In 2024, he has averaged 11.9 disposals, 2.3 tackles and two rebound 50s per game in a stacked Sydney side primed for a premiership push.
Should the Swans earn a place in the AFL Grand Final, Cunningham's selection would be his second grand final appearance in his playing career. Unable to crack into the side in his first year, Cunningham missed the 2012 premiership, as well as 2016 and 2022 runners-up efforts. He was a part of the 2014 grand final defeat to Hawthorn in a season where he played every game.
Cunningham has flown under the radar for the majority of his career, occasionally falling out of selection favour. However, the quiet achiever tallied his 200th game in Round 19 this season. Credit is due to his consistent 2014, 2018 and 2023 seasons, where Cunningham failed to miss a game.
The 30-year-old stalwart has been a one-club player since his first game as a Blood in the inaugural Sydney Derby in 2012. Selected at Pick 93 in the 2011 Rookie Draft, the New South Welshman has forged a remarkable career from such a late selection.
Cunningham said he is pleased to have restored the faith in the Swans for taking a gamble on him as a teenager.
"It's well known the club took a punt on me all those years ago, so I'm pleased to have repaid the faith over a long period of time. To sign on for another two seasons is fantastic," Cunningham said.
The 13-year veteran said exciting times lie ahead for Sydney, who are set to be premiership contenders for this year and beyond.
“We have a young and exciting list, I feel that we are on the right track for success, and I want to be here as we continue to look for that," he added.
“It's an exciting time to be part of the club and I'm happy to be here for at least another two seasons."
Cunningham will likely put the boots on in Swans colours for the 207th time this Friday night, as Sydney host Port Adelaide at the SCG in the first preliminary final.
