Whether it be a tactical integration taking shape over a number of years, a last-ditch effort to revive a player's career, or a short-term fix that turns into something more, AFL clubs are no strangers to the growing practice of a positional shake-up.
With the likes of Isaac Heeney, Rory Lobb, Nick Blakey, Kyle Langford and Ben Keays all transitioning successfully into new roles over recent years, we thought we'd delve into the biggest positional switches heading into the 2025 season.
2. Braeden Campbell
Defender to Forward
Campbell has endured a frustrating career to date, never fully solidifying his place in Sydney's best 22.
Despite playing in back-to-back 23-game seasons, the Academy graduate has often been utilised in the sub role, as seen in both of the Swans' recent grand final outings.
Throughout the course of his 71-game career, the 23-year-old has mostly been used in a defensive capacity, using his speed and elite kicking to set up play behind the ball.
Under new coach Dean Cox, Campbell could be looking to move to a forward half role he made his name in as a junior. During his draft year, Campbell impressed forward of centre, averaging 15.8 disposals, 7.0 tackles and 2.0 goals per game.
If he can bring this level of production to AFL level, then it could prove instrumental in relieving Tom Papley from almost single-handedly carrying the Swans' small forward duties.
