Whether it be a tactical integration taking shape over a number of years, a last-ditch effort to revive a player's career, or a short-term fix that turns into something more, AFL clubs are no strangers to the growing practice of a positional shake-up.
With the likes of Isaac Heeney, Rory Lobb, Nick Blakey, Kyle Langford and Ben Keays all transitioning successfully into new roles over recent years, we thought we'd delve into the biggest positional switches heading into the 2025 season.
4. Reef McInnes
Forward to Defender
In a transition that initially transpired at the backend of 2024, Reef McInnes is looking to breathe new life into his AFL career by transitioning into a role behind the ball.
The former key position forward was trialled down back in the Magpies' VFL side and appears to have made an impression, nailing down a full-time role in the club's defensive third for 2025.
The 22-year-old has failed to make any meaningful impact in his first three seasons as a forward but could yet prove pivotal to what is an ageing Collingwood backline, with the likes of Darcy Moore, Jeremy Howe, Brayden Maynard and Billy Frampton all now north of 28 years old.
In promising signs for Pies fans, Maynard talked up McInnes' switch ahead of the new campaign.
"He's training the house down and has come back in career-best form. I feel like he's put on some size. He's really fit", Maynard said.
The Magpies struggled in their premiership defence can also be largely attributed to their difficulties in replacing retired stalwart Nathan Murphy. The Victorian powerhouse will be hoping McInnes can fill the Murphy void and help them return to the finals fold in 2025.
