10. Gary Ablett Sr.

One of the greatest players to ever play, some say the best, Gary Ablett Sr. actually retired for a brief time.

Starting his V/AFL career with the Hawks in 1981, he played six games before going home. He returned in 1982 but was let go due to difficulty living in the city and missing training sessions.

After moving to the country with his young family in 1983, he was convinced to return to VFL, this time with Geelong.

Ablett shocked the footy world by announcing his retirement in 1991. He cited personal reasons and loss of enjoyment as to reasons why. His 1990 season was plagued by injury, loss of motivation and a separation from his wife.

Ablett was convinced however, to return to footy half way through the season.

It took until 1993, and a move to full-forward for Ablett to reach his best again.

He would play until 1997, finishing with 248 games and 1031 goals.

His achievements? Everything (multiple times) besides a premiership and Brownlow.
