It's often labelled a midfielder's competition, and the AFL has seen a plethora of elite talent in this position, particularly in recent seasons.

Most annual AFL awards and accomplishments are achieved out of the midfield position and while many argue that premierships start with the backline, it is clear that dynasties are made by the midfield (see Richmond, Hawthorn, Brisbane).

While it is scrutinised by many pundits, every AFL All-Australian team is littered with them, 2022 alone featured eight mids all over the ground.

Without further ado, here are our rankings of the top 10 midfielders of 2022.

6. Andrew Brayshaw

Brayshaw was the focal point of a Fremantle side on the rise in 2022, averaging an elite level 29.3 disposals and 6.2 tackles and taking out this year's AFLPA MVP Award. He symbolises everything you'd want out of an up & coming midfielder in the competition with an outstanding work rate and level of tenacity.

He has exceeded what was expected of him with the absence of Nat Fyfe in the Freo midfield and and has already emerged as a future captain of the club.

Dockers fans will be praying he can lead their side to their first AFL premiership over the next decade or so.

His chances of elevating his individual status even further during the next few seasons primarily rests on his ability to inflict scoreboard damage, either through increasing his score involvements, goals or inside 50s.

If he can add to this aspect of his game while sustaining his elite-level tackling ability, Brayshaw could truly be touted as the best in the competition.
