It's often labelled a midfielder's competition, and the AFL has seen a plethora of elite talent in this position, particularly in recent seasons.
Most annual AFL awards and accomplishments are achieved out of the midfield position and while many argue that premierships start with the backline, it is clear that dynasties are made by the midfield (see Richmond, Hawthorn, Brisbane).
While it is scrutinised by many pundits, every AFL All-Australian team is littered with them, 2022 alone featured eight mids all over the ground.

Touk Miller has improved with every season he has played at the Gold Coastย and now sits well within the league's best after winning the prestigious 2022 AFLCA Player of the Year, tied with Clayton Oliver.
After this season, Miller unquestionably sits as Gold Coast's single greatest one-club player in the club's history.
He is the pure midfielder, recording 28.5 disposals, 6 tackles and 8 clearances this season, ranking elite in all categories. In an up & down Suns side, the one constant was Miller performing at the highest level, he is one of only three 2022 non-finals players on this list.
