It's often labelled a midfielder's competition, and the AFL has seen a plethora of elite talent in this position, particularly in recent seasons.

Most annual AFL awards and accomplishments are achieved out of the midfield position and while many argue that premierships start with the backline, it is clear that dynasties are made by the midfield (see Richmond, Hawthorn, Brisbane).

While it is scrutinised by many pundits, every AFL All-Australian team is littered with them, 2022 alone featured eight mids all over the ground.

Without further ado, here are our rankings of the top 10 midfielders of 2022.

4. Callum Mills

The value of Callum Mills to his side sits in isolation to most midfielders in the competition, playing more of a defensive-minded role than most on this list. He is treated almost as a utility within the Swans' lineup, being thrown anywhere John Longmire needs him and playing every role at a very high standard.

His 6.6 marks and 6.3 tackles are ranked elite and his accountability has allowed him to impact winning more than most, often playing a role on the opposition's best midfielder while still getting his own. His 24.4 disposals per game seem very impressive given this fact.

In a similar way to Jack Crisp, Mills can influence his side with particular efforts and moments, whether it be his backline role in Sydney's comeback win over Richmond in Round 11 this year, or his game-saving spoil in the final moments of a preliminary final victory over Collingwood.

His spot this high on the list may be contentious, but is thoroughly deserved after a stellar 2022 season.
