Petracca's performance in Melbourne's thrilling one-point loss to Carlton was a mesmerising display of brute force and a reminder that he is still one of the most formidable talents in the competition.

Starting in the midfield and shadowed closely by Carlton's Matt Kennedy, Petracca's impact seemed stifled, before he shifted forward and booted a career-best five goals from all points of the compass, along with two goal assists and seven tackles, giving the Demons life after falling to a 38-point deficit.

That typical Petracca power was in full swing on the night, bursting through tackles, escaping traffic and feeding teammates in stride with multiple opponents hanging off him.

Carlton coach Michael Voss even hailed Petracca's performance as "pretty special," acknowledging the game-breaking impact that had his defensive troops scrambling.
