5. Defenders

James Sicily

The future captain of Hawthorn put together another outstanding season for the brown and gold, playing all 22 games, taking the most marks in the competition (190 in total, 8.6 per game) during the home and away Season.

Steven May

The premiership defender after a two-match imposed club ban midway through the season, returned to his intercept marking best. May is averaging 7.9 Rebound 50s per game, finishing second only to James Sicily.

Tom Stewart

The ever consistent Cat has carved out an excellent career since being taken as a mature-age recruit in 2017. Despite being suspended for four-matches for his head high bump on Tiger Dion Prestia, the 29-year-old hasn't missed a beat averaging 7.9 marks a match.

Angus Brayshaw

The 26-year-old has arguably had one of his best seasons since finishing third in the 2018 Brownlow Medal. The tough on-baller began this season off half-back after injuries to Chrisitian Salem and Trent Rivers. In the Round 3 victory over Essendon, Brayshaw took a whopping 20 marks.

Sam Taylor

In a disappointing season for GWS, Sam Taylor was one of the rare shining lights. His ability to quell the opposition's number one key forward was a major for the side, with the West Australian putting together one of the best intercept marking performances in the side's loss to Fremantle, taking nine.

Adam Saad

The dashing defender enjoyed an excellent second season in the Navy Blue. With his booming kick, reminiscent of the days of "The Woof" started by Val Perovic and carried on by Ang Christou, the 28-year-old only gained further respect. Saad averaged 21.9 disposals in Season 2022.
