Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric looks set to miss Thursday night's season opening clash with Carlton due to a back injury.

Forward Jack Riewoldt confirmed on 3AW Radio on Monday night that Maric is an unlikely starter.

"Ivan has a little bit of a sore back," Riewoldt said.

"I know at the moment he's given his all to really give himself every chance of playing on Thursday night.

"We're not going to go into round one with any players who are unprepared or under any injury cloud.

"As much as we'd love to have Ivan ... it's a marathon, not a sprint, and we won't be risking any players in round one, just because it's round one and the start of the season."

He joins a growing list of Richmond injuries heading into round one, with Brett Deledio, Chris Yarran and Reece Conca all out injured, while Shaun Grigg is also unlikely to play.
