Round 12 of the VFL competition is in the books as the top 10 begins to take shape heading into the second half of the season.

Brisbane continued their winning ways to kick the weekend off while Sydney and Box Hill registered necessary victories in their pursuit of finals.

Standalone clubs Coburg Lions and Port Melbourne Borough battled wilfully but ultimately fell short of the four premiership points as a Williamstown win puts them in the hunt for a second chance finish.

Brisbane (130) def. Sandringham Zebras (73)

As the AFL side makes a shock run at finals after a disappointing start to the year, so does the reserves, making it four wins on the trot.

A quartet of players (Luke Lloyd, Henry Smith, Jarryd Lyons and Harry Sharp) slotted a trifecta of goals to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Midfielders Deven Robertson and James Tunstill found plenty of the ball while ruckman Darcy Fort gave the Lions first use.

Despite the loss, there were positives for the Zebras with youngster Mattaes Phillipou making his case for an AFL recall.

Phillipou had 28 touches, eight clearances and a goal and was helped by Hugo Garcia (18 possessions and 10 tackles) and Ryan Byrnes (25 disposals and six marks) in the process.

Mid-season pick-up Max Hall kicked three majors as untried ruckman Max Heath is a likely support act for Rowan Marshall in the near future.

Dropped pair Cooper Sharman (one goal, eight touches) and Tim Membrey (two goals, four disposals) responded quietly.

Footscray Bulldogs (56) def. by Sydney (83)

Footscray suffered their second consecutive loss, with their 9-0 start followed by a disappointing fortnight.

Sydney Depth defender Aaron Francis proves to be a viable option for John Longmire if needed, gathering 25 disposals and 10 marks.

Ruckman Peter Ladhams was strong in the contest but was inaccurate in front of goal, slotting four behinds.

Ironically, pre-season selection Joel Hamling kicked four goals to help put the margin beyond doubt for the Swans.

As for the Bulldogs, Oskar Baker was arguably their best, amassing 32 possessions and seven marks.

Unlucky midfielder (missed out on mid-season selections) Cooper Craig-Peters continues to be a recruiter's nightmare as he dominated once again.

Riley Garcia (31 disposals, nine clearances and eight tackles) found plenty of the Sherrin as intercept defender Jedd Busslinger was pivotal in defence.

Richmond (50) def. by Box Hill Hawks (87)

A hot start from Box Hill saw the game sewn up by quarter-time.

Performances from Seamus Mitchell (34 disposals and 14 marks), Harry Morrison (34 touches and nine marks) and Josh Ward (33 possessions, one goal and 10 marks) were the story of the day.

Mid-season recruit Jasper Scaife impressed up forward with three goals while Mitch Lewis' return to action was a success, slotting one goal from eight touches on limited minutes.

From the Tigers' perspective, their outing was disappointing.

Mid-season selection Jacob Blight has shot straight into debut calculations earlier than most thought with a strong performance down back.

Sam Banks was arguably Richmond's best with 20 touches and nine marks while Steely Green (one goal, nine touches) and Jacob Bauer (one goal, seven possessions) were kept quiet.

Collingwood (79) def. by North Melbourne (120)

Like their AFL squad, North Melbourne jumped out of the gates in the opening term but instead, held on to secure a big victory.

Kangaroos VFL skipper Jack Watkins led from the front, collecting 38 disposals and eight clearances in an impressive display.

Watkins was joined by Dylan Stephens (two goals, 32 possessions) and Zane Duursma (three goals and 25 disposals) to ensure the win.

Charlie Lazzaro found plenty of the ball while Cooper Harvey hit the scoreboard often, slotting three goals.

Pre-season selection Tyler Sellars also kicked three while veteran Hugh Greenwood was a clearance machine.

Mid-season recruit Geordie Payne was serviceable, gathering 17 disposals and kicking a goal.

As for the Pies, Jack Bytel responded strongly to his axing, collecting 36 disposals and six clearances while Ash Johnson slotted three goals of his own.

New faces Illiro Smit (26 hit-outs and 10 touches), Josh Eyre (one goal, seven touches) and Wil Parker (17 possessions) continue to build confidence in their game.

Former Pie Ben Crocker kicked three goals.

GWS (71) def. Port Melbourne Borough (57)

A slow start from the Giants left them with a heap of work to do after quarter-time, which they did.

James Peatling was instrumental in the win, slotting two goals from his 31 disposals, 10 clearances and nine tackles.

Isaac Cumming made a successful return to football, kicking a major whilst gathering 15 touches as Max Gruzewski had an almost day, recording 2.3 up forward.

For the Borough, Ex-Bulldog Billy Gowers was arguably their best, kicking 4.5 from 18 possessions.

Captain Harvey Hooper was impressive through the midfield, joined by Robbie McComb and ruckman Felix Flockhart.

Coburg Lions (47) def. by Southport Sharks (58)

In what was a scrappy affair, the Southport Sharks managed to steal victory against the lowly Coburg Lions.

Ruckman Brayden Crossley was pivotal in securing the win, giving his midfielder first use with 37 hit-outs and six clearances of his own.

Boyd Woodcock was back to his best, gathering 33 possessions to go with his eight clearances while Jacob Dawson was equally as good, collecting 31 disposals and kicking a goal.

Jacob Heron was the only multiple-goal scorer for the Sharks whilst also assisting in the clearance game.

Lions gun Flynn Gentile was held to a measly 18 disposals (by his standards) which opened the door for Joel Trudgeon to take charge.

Trudgeon gathered 45 disposals, 10 tackles and nine clearances in a one-man show.

Max Thompson (28 possessions and eight marks) and Lachlan Walker (27 touches) were also impressive.

Williamstown Seagulls (85) def. Northern Bullants (60)

A Williamstown first-quarter blitz set the game up and they never looked back.

Corey Ellison was instrumental in the win, kicking 3.3 from 17 touches but was likely in the front half.

Will Fordham's performance was arguably the best afield, amassing 26 disposals, eight clearances and a goal.

Former Sun Brodie McLaughlin also hit the scoreboard, slotting three of his own while Ex-Roo Aiden Bonar was serviceable on the day.

Despite a disappointing opening 20 minutes, the Bullants rallied from the first break and outscored the Seagulls.

Patrick Fairlie was huge for the visitors, collecting 35 disposals, one goal and six clearances.

Liam Mackie was equally as good, registering 28 touches and a goal while the third component of Northern's midfield, Jean-Luc Velissaris proved his worth in gold.

Sam Gilbert slotted two goals while Christos Kosmas had an almost day, recording 1.3 in front of the big sticks.
