Melbourne veteran Bernie Vince will play on into a 13th AFL season after signing a one-year contract extension with the Demons.

Vince played 19 games for the Dees in 2017, his fourth season with the club since moving from Adelaide.

After a devastating finish to the Demons' season, Vince believes narrowly missing out on the finals will act as motivation for the exciting young list.

"We're going to hurt for a long time and it still hurts now to think about it," Vince said.

"To go through a bit of adversity like we did can, long-term, be a positive as we learn that the little things do count.

"I'm excited about our list.

"When I first started [at Melbourne] we were playing hoping to win, but now there is belief in the way we play and that our brand of footy holds up against the good teams."

Vince has played 212 AFL matches (129 with Adelaide, 83 with Melbourne) since being recruited with pick No.32 in the 2005 National Draft.
