We are looking back at the best teams of the modern era and asking you โ€“ who is the greatest?

Weโ€™ve put 16 of the best sides from the 1980s onwards in a head-to-head elimination tournament where the winner will be voted by you!

There are two groups and four matchups in each section. The winner of each group advances to the grand final.

The winner of the polls, as voted by you, will determine who will advance to the next round where we will post an article showing the upcoming matchups.

Teams from the 80s will face off with teams of the 2000s to create some of the best dream clashes we could imagine. Some old rivalries are reignited from different eras and some of the positional matchups are incredible.

This is a look at each team's individual season, not the club's dynasty or period over multiple years. Some dynasties have been incredible, but we are focusing on the best season in those successful periods.

Moving on to our Round 2 matchups...

GROUP 1

Brisbane (2003) vs Carlton (1981)

Brisbane are widely seen as the best team we have ever seen. But would there no nonsense, go forward at all costs game plan hold up against the great Carlton side of 1981?

There is no denying both sides strength is in the middle of the ground - Michael Voss was always the most dominant force on the ground, however, that may not be the case when the 'Dominator' Wayne Johnstone is around.

The Blues defence is a tad undersized, so Bruce Doull will have his hands full with Jonathan Brown, while at the other end Mark McClure will be followed closely by Mal Michael in the battle of the big boys.

Carlton captain Mike Fitzpatrick provides a clear advantage for the Blues in the ruck but there's no doubting midfield depth is in the Lions favour. The likes of Simon Black, Shaun Hart, Nigel Lappin, Jason Akermanis and Tim Notting are an incredible combination of inside and outside ball movement.

Wayne Harmes may well be tasked with the job of stopping Jason Akermanis when he goes forward. Norm Smith Medalist vs Brownlow Medalist... mouth watering.

Geelong (2009) vs West Coast (1992)

These two teams are probably the two with the most attractive game styles in the tournament - fast and expansive ball movement will be the theme of this thriller.

Peter Matera would be the man the Cats would have to stop. Cameron Ling wouldn't have the pace to go with such an outside player so the task may be turned over to James Kelly. Kelly can hurt Matera going the other way.

Jimmy Bartel is Mr September and the the 2010 Norm Smith Medalist will likely be faced up next to John Worsfold. Tough as nails and a true lock down operator, Worsfold can go close to keep Bartel quiet.

West Coast's half forward line is elite - Chris Lewis and Chris Mainwaring would be defended by Corey Enright and speedster David Wojinski respectively. Matthew Scarlett would lock down Peter Sumich, who is an all-time great set shot specialist.

Glen Jakovich goes up against fellow hard nut Cameron Mooney in a direct matchup that may be as good a side show as the main event.

High scores predicted for this one!

GROUP 2

Hawthorn (2013) vs West Coast (2006)

Where to start? The midfield groups of these two sides are the clear feature. Dean Cox gets the advantage over Max Bailey and that may prove decisive. Such an advantage is monumental given the firepower in the Eagles midfield.

Ben Cousins is skilful, quick and can run all day. The former skipper has a great footy IQ and will need every bit of that against the Hawks. Chris Judd is an all-time great and unstoppable on his day. Judd would face up next to Sam Mitchell, two clearance kings.

Luke Hodge will general off half back and there are doubts on the Eagles forward line's ability to combat the Hawks run. No obvious pressure forward may leave the Eagles exposed.

Adam Hunter probably takes the Lance Franklin matchup, which may affect his ability to go forward as he did in the 2006 Grand Final. Darren Glass will take Jarryd Roughead and Cyril Rioli will be kept close by Adam Selwood.

Brian Lake's intercept marking won him a Norm Smith medal in 2013 and with West Coast's undersized forward line, he may be able to have a similar influence.

Hawthorn (1986) vs Essendon (2000)

One of the great modern day rivalries, the Hawks and the Bombers go at it once again. Essendon were dominant in their prime and borderline unstoppable, known for their hard physical edge they may be in for a reality check against this Hawthorn side.

The Hawks were as tough and hard as they came - Dermott Brereton leads the way at centre half forward and will give Dean Wallis a tough time. You get the feeling these two would go at it all day long!

Jason Dunstall would be kept close by Dustin Fletcher deep forward in a pivotal matchup. Chris Langford would be charged with stopping Matthew Lloyd at the other end. Lloyd and Dunstall may be the battle that decides this game.

Michael Tuck and James Hird won't be hard to spot, with the two legends in their long sleeve jumpers and found wherever the ball is. Truly a dream matchup.

Gary Ayres will need to focus on locking down Michael Long in a battle befitting any era of football. A smorgasbord of must-see match ups this.
