Western Australia and Perth are believed to be "gaining momentum" as the next host of the AFL's Gather Round.

A concept well within its infancy, the footy festival has entered the second year since its creation, with South Australia hosting from last year until the end of 2026.

Labelled a huge success despite only one weekend in the books (currently in the second), all states are trying to get their hands on the extravaganza, with reports indicating an injection of around $83m in the SA economy in 2023 whilst generating over 150,000 visitor nights, according to The Advertiser.

Channel 9 and Fremantle legend Matthew Pavlich said the AFL is open to moving Gather Round, with Perth being a viable option for the future.

"Wouldn't that be huge (to see Gather Round in Western Australia)," Pavlich said

"The push is gaining momentum as well.

"I've spoken to CEO Andrew Dillon and Chairman Richard Goyder, who both declared it's a genuine possibility once the South Australian deal expires in 2026.

"The league's heavy hitters are confident Perth has the facilities and the fan interest to cater for the event."

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon spoke on Perth's facilities and the success they had when hosting the majority of the 2021 season (due to COVID).

"Optus Stadium is an incredible stadium, we had the grand final there a couple of years back and that was great," Dillon said.

"What I want to do is work with Freo, West Coast and the WA government to make sure that we can content in (the stadium)."

Aside from the 61,000-person capacity at Optus Stadium, Perth has a vast range of football ovals and arenas that are feasible for hosting an AFL game.

The WACA (Western Australian Cricket Association) Ground is one of the viable stadiums that is currently being redeveloped.

Filled with history, the WACA once hosted all-night AFL games in Perth until the lighting was installed at Subiaco Oval, hosting its last official AFL game on 16th July 2000.

Leederville Oval - which featured the 2022 WAFL Grand Final between West Perth and Claremont - can hold 17,000 patrons and is a measly 12-minute drive from Optus Stadium.

Steeped in tradition, the ground has been used since 1915, with WAFL teams East Perth Royals and Subiaco FC and formerly home of the West Perth Falcons calling Leederville home.

The East Fremantle Oval and Wonthella Oval in Geraldton also pose as options to host AFL games, with the latter hosting a JLT Community Series match in 2017.
