Greater Western Sydney midfielder Callan Ward has revealed he has received death threats following last nights controversial decision during the Giants' four-point win over Essendon.

Ward was slated by AFL fans for allegedly staging a free-kick in the dying minutes of Friday night's match against the Bombers, with the eventual set shot goal securing the four points for Leon Cameron's side.

Speaking on 3AW, Ward revealed he had received death threats by angered fans.

"I know it's the reality and it's social media - I won't listen to all of it but there are people out there who do. And it has to stop. If you're getting death threats like I did - there are some players who couldn't handle that."

Ward was also subject to indecent comments on his Instagram account and personal email, with comments hoping Ward would re-injure his knee.
