West Coast Eagles AFLW coach Michael Prior has stood down from his role, effective immediately.
Since taking over the role as coach in 2022 for the sixth season of the AFLW, Prior has coached 28 games with a record of five wins and 23 losses. This season hasn't been going to plan either for the Eagles, with two wins and six losses from the eight games played so far, sitting in 16th position on the ladder.
The news of Prior's decision comes after a shock upset victory for the Eagles, who defeated the now fifth-placed Bombers by four points over the weekend.
The Eagles confirmed Prior's call on Wednesday morning, with news coming out of West Coast camp that last weekend's match is to be the coach's last after a tough three years at the club.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the role as senior coach of this amazing group,โ Prior said in a club statement.
โThere is exciting upside for these players moving forward, but after three seasons I believe it is time for a new voice.
โI made the decision earlier in the season that this would be my last as senior coach and I believe the time is right to now step aside. I'll leave on a high after being a part of an exciting win at Windy Hill on Sunday.
โI would like to thank the players and staff for their support over the last three seasons and I look forward to seeing their continued growth.โ
Prior had made headlines recently due to his comments post-game towards the AFL's fixturing of the Eagles after receiving their fourth-biggest loss in AFLW history to the reigning premiers Melbourne.
He will now step into a role with the Eagles where he'll overlook the club's communityย and Game Development.
The Eagles confirmed assistant Rohan McHugh will take on the senior coaching role for the remaining two games of the 2023 season.
โMichael assumed the role in difficult circumstances where our AFLW team played two seasons in the same year,โ CEO Trevor Nisbett said.
โI would like to thank him for his commitment to the program and for the role he has played in shaping what we believe is a squad capable of evolving into a formidable team.
โWe will play out the season and then navigate our way forward as we search for a senior coach.โ
The Eagles are now on the hunt for the fourth coach in their AFLW history, with Prior succeeding Daniel Pratt and Luke Dwyer.
