Essendon assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa is the latest candidate to bow out of the West Coast senior coaching role race, indicating his intentions to remain in Victoria.

Giansiracusa - who is highly regarded at the Bombers - was initially flagged for the job alongside untried contenders Ashley Hansen, Brett Montgomery and interim coach Jarrad Schofield.

Giansiracusa's reasoning for remaining at the Hangar is family-related, with his daughter entering VCE and the possibility of the move being a distraction, according to AFL Media.

The 42-year-old still holds ambitions to one day be a senior coach, having been close for the Carlton and Richmond jobs, which were both won by Michael Voss and Adem Yze.

His credentials are impressive, and after retiring at the end of 2014, the Victorian started as forwards coach at the Bulldogs in 2015, coached the VFL team in 2019 and was named assistant coach of the year in 2020.

Giansiracusa has been with the Bombers since and has become a crucial cog in the club's football department.

The state of play for the Eagles coaching job has seemingly narrowed down to a few names.

Hansen (Carlton) recently pulled out of the race, opting to remain in Victoria for family reasons, while Josh Carr (Port Adelaide) and Dean Cox (Sydney) have also decided to remain put.

Ken Hinkley and Nathan Buckley scoffed at the idea, leaving Schofield and Montgomery on deck.

However, a smokey from the shadows, Melbourne assistant coach Andrew McQualter, has cycled again as reports confirmed that he was contacted by the West Coast hierarchy.

McQualter narrowly missed out on the main Richmond gig to Yze but has no doubt lost aspirations to lead an AFL team.

The former Tiger interim coach is understood to be considering applying for the job.
