Young gun and reigning number 1 Pick Harley Reid is going to be quickly locked away long-term if West Coast had its way.
Eagles football boss Don Pyke says the club hopes to keep Reid "for as long as we possibly can".
Under amended AFL rules, a new draftee can negotiate a deal with the club after Round 6, and Pyke is keen to get things going.
“We're aware of the timeline and we're aware it's Round 6. We're not sitting on our hands, let's put it that way,” Pyke said on Triple M Footy.
“We'll talk about that with his management. It really comes down to what he'd be comfortable with.
“We'd clearly like to get him for as long as we possibly could.
“We think he'd be an important part of what we're doing going forward.
“He's a fantastic young guy.
“He loves his footy, loves playing, you can see he loves competing, loves winning.
“He can see there's a real opportunity here to build something with him being a significant part of it.”
Pyke said Reid was the type of person and player the club was keen to hold onto.
“He's an 18-year-old boy so we're mindful of the exposure we give him,” Pyke said.
“He's certainly been a bright light for our members and fans. When he gets hold of the pill… everyone gets up and about.
“We're trying not to overuse him and manage as best we can.”
Fresh off a dominating performance - and the Eagles' second win - Reid slotted three goals from his 19 touches to go along with his seven clearances.
