West Coast list manager Matt Clarke has attempted to cool discussions over No.1 draft pick Harley Reid's contract extension.
Clarke said the club remains โcomfortableโ in working through the negotiations for Reid's new deal.
โWe're not in a rush. He's contracted for three years. So we understand the media's involvement and wanting to get something done,โ he said.
Clarke confirmed the club remains in communication with Reid's management over a new deal.
Reid had a breakout season in his debut year for the Eagles, winning the AFLPA's Best First-Year Player title.
The Eagles list manager said Reid's age remained a factor in the continued process for a new contract with the development of his relationship with new head coach Andrew McQualter.
โFrom our point of view we just want to make the boy relaxed,โ he said
โHe's a 19-year-old kid playing away from home, new coach, new environment - It's going to be really important for us to get through the pre-season what it looks like from there.โ
Finishing 16th in 2024 - their third bottom-four finish in successive years - the Eagles remain a big player in the AFL trade period.
Following key defender Tom Barrass' trade request to Hawthorn, Clarke said they are waiting on a satisfactory offer from the Hawks for a contracted player.
โHe's (Tom) a contract to play for three years - We'll have more conversations with Hawthorne about what they think,โ said Clarke.
โSo it's up to them to come to us now and put a fair deal on the table.โ
With the club signing Richmond player Jack Graham on a four-year deal, Clarke said the club will continue to engage in the trade process.
Out of favour Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson has reportedly told the Lions he wants to explore trade options.
โThe club spoke to Deven last year,โ he said.
โI think he's probably looking for an opportunity somewhere, so it'll be open to Brisbane. He's contracted as well.โ
The Eagles will continue to be a key part of the AFL Trade Period, which is set to close on October 16.
