West Coast reportedly sounded out former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley, who has turned down the opportunity to pursue the vacant role at the Eagles.

The Perth club, which has named a five-person selection panel to find the Eagles' next coach, has begun contacting candidates who could replace the departed Adam Simpson.

Former Eagle Dean Cox and Port Adelaide assistant Josh Carr have stated they aren't interested, while Power coach Ken Hinkley has swatted away questions over his future amid West Coast's search.

Should an experienced mentor be the option the Eagles desire, Buckley would be one of the best available.

However, following a conversation with West Coast CEO Don Pyke this week, Buckley turned down the option to take part in the Eagles' process, perย 7 News'ย Mitch Cleary.

"Buckley had a half-an-hour phone call with Eagles CEO Don Pyke yesterday," Cleary said on Thursday night.

"After hearing what the Eagles put forward Buckley said thanks but no thanks, opting not to take part in their coaching process, telling Pyke he is no closer to getting his head around a return to the coaches box."

Buckley has not ruled out a return to coaching after departing Collingwood midway through 2021, however has stated he will await to see if the desire to coach again ever returns.

Buckley led Collingwood for a decade after taking the reins from Mick Malthouse ahead of the 2012 season, coaching 218 matches with the Magpies for a return of 117 wins.

Former West Coast players Jaymie Graham and Ash Hansen, as well as GWS assistant Brett Montgomery, are seen as the top candidates for the West Coast job.
