The Western Bulldogs have confirmed young midfielder Britney Gutknecht will undergo surgery on a broken leg suffered in Saturday's Round 2 win over Port Adelaide.

Worrying scenes at Alberton Oval saw Gutknecht require an ambulance to be assisted off the field, with play stopped for over 20 minutes during the second quarter.

The on-field incident involving the Power's Abbey Dowrick saw Gutknecht in great pain on the ground, with the club now confirming the 21-year-old has broken her tibia and fibula in her right leg.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Bulldogs revealed Gutknecht will remain in South Australia until she is able to fly back home after undergoing surgery.

The club are set to release further details of the utility's recovery timeline, however her 2022 campaign is seemingly over.

Gutknecht played 16 games for the Dogs since making her debut in 2020 against West Coast.

Saturday's 28-9 win saw the Bulldogs remain undefeated to start their AFLW season, currently sitting third behind fellow 2-0 sides Geelong and Collingwood.
