Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has been sporting a scruffy looking beard over the last couple of weeks and the reason behind it is an unusual one.
The usually clean shaven Brownlow Medallist hasn’t just gotten lazy with the razor, he has made a deal with his team that as long as they keep performing, he will keep the beard.
The beard started with a bet between the Collingwood defensive unit and the coaching staff.
Collingwood were conceding too many scores from stoppages in their defensive 50 so the coaching staff made a deal with them.
If they gave away a stoppage goal in their backline, the Collingwood players were not allowed to shave for the week but if they didn’t, it was the coaches that had to go on the shaving strike.
So basically, the longer Bucks’ beard is, the better the Pies are going.
Collingwood haven’t conceded a goal from a backline stoppage for three weeks and that’s why Buckley’s beard is as scruffy as we’ve ever seen.
This weekend the Magpies face the Demons who are on a roll at the moment and arguably have the most dangerous forward line in the competition since the return of Tom McDonald and the rise of Jake Melksham, but Buckley hope’s the beard will last another week.
“We don’t want to give this game up to the Dees,” Buckley said.
“But if this particular aspect of our game is clean, well then we’re going to have some scruffy coaches on the other side of the bye.”
