GWS midfielder Lachie Whitfield is set to knock back offers from a number of Victorian clubs and sign a contract extension with the Giants.
The 23-year-old has been linked to Victorian clubs such as Hawthorn and St Kilda, despite already being contracted for the 2018 season.
The reports linking him to a move back home have been rubbished by his manager Tom Petroro, who said Whitfield is loving life in Sydney and will sign an extension when their season is over.
“Lachie is as happy as he has been there,” Petroro told the Herald Sun.
“GWS is keen to consider a contract extension and I couldn’t see that being an issue. But parties will sit down at the end of the year.”
Whitfield missed the first seven games of the season after he was handed a six-month ban by the AFL for attempting to avoid a drug test.
Since returning in round eight, the midfielder has enjoyed one of his most consistent years to date, and averaged 24.7 disposals, 6.1 marks, 3.4 tackles, 4.1 inside 50s and 2.4 clearances per game over the regular season.
“He couldn’t be more comfortable,” GWS football boss Wayne Campbell added.
“He missed the start of the year and is from Melbourne and so, when we sign one (player), people move on to the next person. But he couldn’t be more comfortable here.”
As well as Whitfield, the Giants are still unsure of the futures of forward Devon Smith and midfielder Josh Kelly, who are both out of contract at season's end.
Smith has been heavily linked to a move to Geelong, while Kelly may head back to Victoria, although GWS are confident the classy midfielder will sign a two-year extension.
