Melbourne youngster Andy Moniz-Wakefield has been carried from the field with just two minutes remaining in the pre-season contest, wincing and signalling to his lower right leg that indicated a potential injury.
Moniz-Wakefield played solidly in his appearances throughout the match simulation, in what were sweltering conditions at Arden Street on Saturday.
The apparent injury was suffered after new Kangaroo Jacob Konstanty laid a chase-down tackle on Moniz-Wakefield, who then rolled the Demon in the tackle. Lying on the ground in pain, the 21-year-old's teammates immediately raised their hands to get medical staff onto the field to attend to the medium defender.
Moniz-Wakefield motioned to his right leg, before attempting to get up on his own and hobble towards the boundary line. Unable to bear weight on the leg, medical staff carried the youngster from the field in a sour ending to Melbourne's day.
"He's in a fair bit of anguish," Fox Footy commentator Sam Hargreaves said.
Melbourne assistant coach Troy Chaplin said the injury "didn't look good".
โObviously he's pretty flat at the moment, but we'll have to go away and get a scan just to confirm it,โ Chaplin said.
โIt didn't look good, from a visual point of view, but we're hoping for the best there."
The undermanned Demons side held off a scrappy and persistent North Melbourne unit in the unofficial pre-season match at Arden Street on Saturday.
The Kangaroos stayed in touch of the Demons throughout most of the match, trailing by a tick under three goals at the final change, however, the experience and fitness of Melbourne allowed them to kick away in the last term.
The Demons extended the margin beyond 40 points as sweltering conditions kicked in, leaving the Roos on their haunches as the clock ticked down to the final siren.
Fingers crossed for Andy Moniz-Wakefield.
